Jaz joined HiDef in November 2020 and has a background in marine biology gained from her Bsc in Marine Biology and Oceanography from the University of Southampton in 2018 and Msc in Marine Biology from Bangor University in 2020. Her research so far has primarily focused on marine mammals, assessing the distribution of large whales and more recently, risk mapping the bycatch of northwest European small cetaceans. This is complemented by fieldwork assessing bottlenose dolphin populations in the Adriatic and Cardigan Bay, West Wales. Volunteer positions in multiple marine sectors, such as conservation, environmental education and hydrography have given her a diverse background and knowledge of a wide range of survey techniques which she hopes to use to her advantage while working for HiDef.
