SNH break new ground for deer surveys from fixed wing aircraft

Lake district firm HiDef Aerial Surveying announced they have been contracted to undertake trial surveys for Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH). The agreement is to develop a bespoke digital video survey model to conduct census counts of various deer species within the Scottish Highlands. Historically the surveys have been undertaken using two helicopters relying on specialist SNH staff to capture still images from hand held cameras. HiDef approached the statutory advisor advocating the use of a fixed wing aircraft operating at significantly higher altitudes with a view to reducing costs.

John Martin, Managing Director at HiDef commented, “Performing surveys from fixed wing platform offers substantial benefits in terms of reduction of health and safety hazards and avoiding disturbance to the deer through low level helicopter noise. Fixed wing also offer cost reductions potentially allowing for a more extensive survey regime.”

HiDef support Marine Scotland and JNCC with aerial surveys for the Aberdeen oil spill

Following the recent oil spill incident at Shell’s Gannet Alpha platform 112 miles east of Aberdeen, HiDef received a request from statutory advisor JNCC to conduct aerial surveys over a 1,200 square km area using their super high definition aerial camera platform.

HiDef mobilised within twelve hours of request and flew multiple sorties over the effected area capturing imagery of the oil slick and wildlife in the area, with reports and analysis delivered to the stakeholders within hours of the aircraft returning to base.

Finlay Benet of JNCC noted “It is the first time a digital platform has been deployed for this type of work. Having a permanent record of the actual survey is useful for assurance purposes, being able to plan the following days operational priorities from empirical data is invaluable, HiDef were able to deliver this.”

John Martin, HiDef’s Managing Director added, “We were delighted to have been selected to conduct this work, although the challenge was daunting. Aircraft, camera rigs and personnel were all moved to Aberdeen within two hours of being awarded the project; a full technical environment was commissioned at a local third party location and was ready for operation by the time the aircraft returned from their first sorties. This is the first time a digital survey supplier has been tasked to conduct emergency operations anywhere in the world.”

Statutory advisor to join HiDef Surveying

Statutory advisor to join HiDef Surveying

We are pleased to announce that Andy Webb, JNCC’s senior marine bird officer will be joining the HiDef Aerial Surveying team at the end of September. As Environmental & Statistics Manager Andy will be responsible for the development of services, working in partnership with our clients, statutory advisors and regulators.

Webb has spent the last 28 years working in various roles within JNCC, most recently as Seabird and Cetacean Monitoring Ecologist where he was responsible for developing advice on options for monitoring seabirds and cetaceans in UK waters to meet statutory and international obligations. Andy is credited with being one of a handful of stakeholders responsible for pioneering the use of digital technology in ecological surveying.

John Martin, Managing Director at HiDef commented “Quite rightly advisors and regulators are asking challenging questions of offshore wind farm developers, it is our task to ensure as a service provider we understand these questions, and through technology are able to address them on behalf of the renewables sector. To do this in a robust and cost effective manner one needs to have full visibility of the rationale the advisory and regulatory community are employing. Andy gives us an unparalleled insight into these questions and will be central to further increasing the value we offer to the community in the future.”

HiDef announce world leading 0.5cm GSD video survey capability

HiDef are pleased to announce successful deployment of their latest 0.5cm GSD video camera technologies. This breakthrough technology, built on our custom designed aerial surveying platform offers crystal clear, blur free imagery supporting reliable classification of over 90% of birds to species in offshore surveys.

John Martin commented “This represents a major leap forward in the aerial surveying market and its application to ornithological and cetacean surveying. We believe that 0.5cm GSD resolution can represent an order of magnitude better than many other service providers are able to offer. The introduction of this latest camera technology means for the first time aerial surveys can provide comparable identification rates to boat surveys. John adds, we believe this will expand the aerial market as some of our clients are already reducing their boat based operations in favour of cheaper aerial sorties”.
